Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has expressed his ambition to win the Europa League.

Manchester United were knocked out of Champions League after losing their final group stage match against Basel. Ferguson says that being placed in Europa League is a punishment for his team but says he wants to win the Europa League.

"The Europa League is a good competition and a strong competition," he said. "You only need to look at the teams left in it.

"I made the point the other night that it's a punishment for us to be in the Europa League.

"What I mean by that is for 20 years this club has only thought about the Champions League. We've only thought about winning that European Cup.

"That's the punishment in terms of the disappointment of not being able to challenge for it this year, especially having been in three finals in the last four years.

"It's not a slight against the Europa League - it's a competition we want to win. We're in it and we'll try to win it."

Wenger has said the disappointment of getting knocked out of Champions League is just part of being a big club with high expectations.

I really don't see how Sir Alex Ferguson disrespected the Europa League. He said he wanted to win it, the only reason why he said it was a penalty is that Manchester Untied don't belong there.

Loosing to Liverpool is always painful and loosing after such a dismal performance was not pleasing at all. One of the worst performances I have seen from Manchester United players for a long long time. Players lacked passion, desire, and energy.

Suarez and Dirk Kuyt were good a little too good for Manchester Untied. United couldn't handle Suarez, he was dancing all over the pitch with absolutely no pressure at all.

Smalling was good today but needed someone to partner him. Wes Brown is not good enough, we could have done better by playing O'Shea in the center of defense to partner Smalling.

The title hopes are alive but United have certainly made it difficult after the previous two performances. The race is wide open and I can see United can still win it but they will have to improve and improve quickly.

"The players around me make it so much easier. They are always talking to me. When I had my first touch I just felt like one of the other lads who play regularly every week.

"I was talking to Rio on Friday and he was giving me little pointers. He has played with and against Carlos Tevez for many years and seen him in training every day for a couple of years so he was giving me little bits of advice on how to play him.

"He was making the point that Carlos likes to feel the defenders at his back. So you let him have his touch before you move in and go for him. It was great advice because he is a tricky player. It was a really good challenge for me.

"To have that knowledge to tap into is incredible. You get so much feedback with players you are playing with, players who are injured like Rio and the many coaches we have. It really puts me at ease and allows you to enjoy the occasion.

"It is great to have that pre-match advice but you also cannot beat first-hand experience. You can watch as many videos as you want but until you face them it is different.

"I faced Carlos for Fulham last season and I did really well in one match and then another time he got the better of me. So to be able to re-test myself against a world class striker was good

"We played City in the Carling Cup and I did well against him but then we played at Craven Cottage in the league and I was turned too easily and he scored.

"Rio and the coaches were telling me not to do anything rash. Their comments, coupled with what I knew from last season's experience, helped me. It paid off and I hope it showed.

"I was able to be calm before this massive occasion because I had also learnt from last season at Fulham.

"I have learnt a lot to calm down. At Fulham I think I hyped myself up too much at times and got a bit tense and then I made mistakes. Playing centre-back is all about being calm and that is sinking in now. Now I feel I can relax and play my normal game.

"I am on a high now. I want to finish the season strongly. I hope I can prove to the manager that I can play a part. I am feeling really confident at the moment."

Beating Liverpool on any given day is a good feeling but kicking them out of FA cup on a day when Kenny Dalglish was supposed to turn things around for them is something special. We were clearly the better team and I have to say that it was a deserved victory over Liverpool. Well done boys.

Steven Gerrard's tackle was ugly, I have to say this and the he deserved a red. You just cannot tackle your opponent like that, there is no other way to put it. It was so nice to see 1-0 up and seeing Steven Gerrard walking out of the ground.

Penalty decision was a soft one. I wouldn't totally agree with the decision but as a United fan I would take it. Berbatov went down a little too easily for my liking but that the decider and I am happy that it decided in our favor.

Johny Evans performed a bit better than my expectations and so did Carrick. Fletcher was never in the game. Torres never looked like the Torres that we know (good for us) one wonders why he is still at such a club.

United didn't look that sharp going forward. Being 1-0 up so early means attacking more but finishing didn't look that promising. But, all that can be forgotten by the victory over Liverpool.

Manchester United veteran Ryan Giggs has said that he will miss playing big games when he retires. Ryan Giggs who is the part of Manchester United squad for FA Cup match against Liverpool has expressed his feelings towards playing in the big games.

"I relish the big games even more," Giggs told the Mail on Sunday. "You want to enjoy it and make the most of it at the time.

"When you finish it's the big games which you're going to miss, against Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, the big European games, the atmosphere."

Giggs also mentioned that he is grateful that he entered this profession and says things have changed quite a lot since his time.

"I was lucky in that I had people around me, I still lived at home and the manager kept an eye on me," he said.

"They probably don't have that now because there are so many players getting good money at a young age, and you have to pay them or they'll go elsewhere.

"That never used to be the case. You don't resent it because things have changed. That's one of the manager's strengths - he moves with the times, realises that football changes."

A club is yet to be decided but there is a probability that Federico Macheda will be heading to some Serie A club.

Sir Alex has emphasized that this is strictly a short-term move and that Federico Macheda has a big future at Old Trafford.

"I had a chat with Federico and explained the Welbeck situation," said Ferguson.

"It can pan out exactly the same for him. It would be the same thing, going to a club, getting that experience for six months and coming back to us a better player.

"The reason we let Danny Welbeck and Mame Biram Diouf go was that they are young and they need games.

"And with Welbeck it has proved the point that through consistent, regular football, you can progress dramatically.

"Okay, in the previous two years he played in two cup finals and an FA Cup semi-final.

Sir Alex Ferguson has said that his side deserved the three points and Nikola Zigic had handled the ball and committed a foul when challenging for a Roger Johnson cross which Lee Bowyer eventually converted in the 89th minute at St Andrew's on Tuesday.

Dimitar Berbatov's second half goal that seemed to be decisive was not enough to get Manchester United an away win at St Andrews. That was Dimitar Berbatov's 15th goals of the season.

The draw means that Manchester United are now on the top of the table ahead on goal difference with two games in hand. But, certainly this was a game that they would have fancied themselves to win.

Manchester United didn't look sharp in the first half, despite Ryan Giggs hitting the goal post, Manchester United were playing far below their potential in the first half.

Second half goal by Dimitar Berbatov seemed to seal the game by Lee Bowyer had different idea who scored the late equalizer to get his team precious 1 point.

Wayne Rooney once again could not score a goal despite trying hard from yards out. United were lacking creativity and were not creating that many chances.

Blues defender Scott Dann was yellow-carded for a late challenge on Berbatov. Ben Foster made a fine effort to save a powerful Vidic header from Giggs' corner.

McLeish brought on Nikola Zigic and Kevin Phillips in place of Beausejour and Jerome respectively.

The best was left for last Lee Bowyer scored the late goal in 89th min. to make the score 1-1. 4 min. were added but neither United nor Birmingham could steal the win.

After scoring two goals on Boxing Day, Sir Alex Ferguson has awarded Dimitar Berbatov a target of 25 goals for this season.

Berbatov scored two goals in Manchester United's previous win against Sunderland and is looking in the form of his life at Manchester. The two goals took Berbatov's goal telly for the season to 14 goals.

But, Sir Alex Ferguson is expecting a lot more from his £30.75million Bulgarian striker.

"There are certain games when we like to play one up front and three central midfield players, Dimitar understands that," justified Ferguson about his omission of Berbatov from the game against Arsenal even though he scored five goals in the game before that.

"But his form has been terrific. He is on 13 goals now. If he can get us to 25, we need one more to get around that figure, then we will have a good chance."

I back Berba to get 25 or more goal this season. He is a top quality player and is coming in the right for at the right time for us.
