Wayne Rooney has characteristically promised to give his absolute all to help United win a fourth consecutive Barclays Premier League title this season.

The high-octane Reds front man, who recently became a father, has no intention of letting up on the pitch or having a rest in the coming weeks.

And when asked if he'd ever considered preserving his energy during games, he smiled and said: "No, not really."

"I am sure there will be games when I will have the chance to be rested," he adds. "I would prefer to play but if the manager decides to rest me, it is his decision."

The recent 1-0 defeat to Chelsea means United have gone into the current international break five points adrift of leaders Chelsea and trailing second-placed Arsenal on goal difference.

But that has merely heightened Rooney's sense of purpose for when the Reds return to action next weekend against his former club Everton at Old Trafford.

"We are trying to win the league at Manchester United, which is important to me," he said. "If anything, after losing at Chelsea on Sunday, we have to try even harder now to pull the gap back."

Dimitar Berbatov struck a first-half hat-trick as Bulgaria completed a disappointing World Cup campaign with a 6-2 win over Georgia in Sofia.

The Manchester United striker netted in the 6th, 23rd and 36th minutes as the home side went in 6-1 up at the break. Manchester City's Martin Petrov was also on target twice, with Stanislav Angelov completing the scoring.

Scholes collected his first yellow card in the 51st minute for a needless swipe on Crouch, who hit the bar with a close range header moments later. Even though Manchester United were a man down they didn't look down at all and continue to play their game and kept attacking at spurs goal while staying strong in defense.

Arsene Wenger was sent to stands late on as Manchester United hit back to beat Arsenal 2-1 in the Premier League at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Andrey Arshavin gave the visitors the lead with a stunning strike from 25 yards five minutes before the break but a Wayne Rooney penalty and Abou Diaby's own goal gave Sir Alex Ferguson's men a hugely important win even at this early stage of the season.

The Gunners, looking to maintain their 100% start to the season, were the better side in the opening period and could have had a penalty when Arshavin was brought down by Darren Fletcher six minutes before the break.

However, the Gunners grabbed the lead moments later when Arshavin's blistering 25-yarder caught Ben Foster off guard.

Foster reacted superbly to keep out Robin van Persie's close-range effort at the start of the second half, while Antonio Valencia blazed over the bar at the other end in a rare United attack.

Just when it looked as if the home side were beginning to run out of ideas Ryan Giggs played in Rooney, who touched the ball past Manuel Almunia and went down under the challenge - a definite penalty that the England striker stepped up to dispatch past the Gunners stopper.

Van Persie saw a free-kick tipped onto the bar by Foster as the action really livened up - but United were in front a minute later when Giggs' free-kick from the right was inexplicably headed into his own net by Diaby.

Dimitar Berbatov and Nani squandered great chances to put the Gunners out of sight in injury time, while van Persie had a goal ruled out for offside which led to Wenger being sent to the stands.

United move to up to third in the Premier League table, while the Gunners drop down to fifth.

Sir Alex Ferguson saluted Wayne Rooney after the striker scored twice in Manchester United's 5-0 win at Wigan to reach 100 goals for the club.

Rooney scored a brace in Saturday's Premier League clash at the DW Stadium in an emphatic response to the midweek defeat at Burnley.

Michael Owen also got off the mark for United with Dimitar Berbatov and Nani extending their lead - all the goals coming in the second half.

However the day belonged to England ace Rooney with his 100th and 101st goals for United.

He made the breakthrough with a header from Antonio Valencia's cross and then clipped the ball home after his effort took a slight deflection off Mario Melchiot.

Ferguson said: "It is a great achievement and he is only a young lad.

"Some players have been at the club for many years and not reached that total yet. It will do him a world of good.

"Strikers have to score - that is their mantra. If they are not scoring, they think the world is at an end.

"When they are scoring, they think they will never finish scoring. But that is what they are."

Owen replaced Rooney in the 72nd minute and 13 minutes later beat goalkeeper Chris Kirkland with a cool finish to make it 4-0. It was a clever strike by the former Newcastle striker, who arrived in the summer.

But Ferguson was not that surprised. "That is what he needed, he needed a goal," said the Old Trafford boss.

"It is what he is made of. All his career has been about goals. He is one the best finishers this country has ever had. Today can only help him.

"I was so pleased for him and Dimitar Berbatov. If the strikers keep doing that it gives us a big chance."

Nani sewed things up with a blistering free-kick in stoppage time and Ferguson was pleased with the way his players reacted to the humbling at Turf Moor, especially in the second half.

He added: "You have got to react to defeat and it is always a challenge. But we got a really good response today.

"When you are making chances and dont take them it is a worry. We made six chances in the first half and did not take any.

"But the important thing is to have the patience to keep playing and keep believing and we did that."

United have now beaten Wigan in all nine Premier League meetings but manager Roberto Martinez took some comfort from the heavy defeat.

Jason Koumas and Hugo Rodallega both came close to scoring only for goalkeeper Ben Foster to make two superb saves.

Martinez said: "We have had a big turnaround of players but I can take a lot of positives up until the point United scored the first goal.

"I am pleased with many aspects but disappointed in discipline. We knew United would come and try to dictate the play.

"The big difference for me was that when we conceded first goal and missed a good chance it affected us too much. We need to work on many things and become stronger."

Martinez handed a debut to French midfielder Mohamed Diame after finally securing his services from Spanish side Rayo Vallecano only hours before the game but he struggled to make an impression on the game.

Rooney Scored His 100th, while Owen scored his 1st, United trashed Wigan by 5 goals to nil.

Rooney made the breakthrough in the 56th minute and got his second nine minutes later in a fine second half show.

In between Dimitar Berbatov found the target in the 58th minute as United bounced back from their humbling by newly-promoted Burnley in midweek.

Owen made his mark in the 85th minute after replacing Rooney 13 minutes earlier and Nani completed the scoring in stoppage time with a superb free-kick.

The day, however, belonged to Rooney, such an unselfish worker, as he scored his 100th and 101st goals for the club.

Yet United found it hard going in the first half even though they had plenty of possession.

Manager Sir Alex Ferguson looked concerned at the break after making seven changes to his side in a bid for victory at the DW Stadium.

He was looking for an immediate response after what happened at Turf Moor and his side almost took the lead in the fourth minute with a swift break.

Nani cut the ball back into the area and Darren Fletcher was the first to react but saw his effort cleared off the line by Titus Bramble.

Three minutes later Paul Scholes hoisted a shot high over the bar following a clever flick from Berbatov after Fletcher had carved out the opening.

Wigan were again on the back foot after 16 minutes when Rooney strode forward but his effort was deflected wide.

Rooney then made time and space in the area only for goalkeeper Chris Kirkland to smother his close-range shot.

United were looking menacing every time they poured forward and Berbatov headed into Kirkland's arms following a cross from Nani four minutes later.

Wigan, however, almost took the lead with their first real attack in the 26th minute.

Jason Koumas showed good skill to work his way to the edge of the penalty area. He tried to curl the ball beyond Ben Foster only for the goalkeeper to react superbly and divert it to safety.

United responded in the 32nd minute and Rooney got away from Bramble only to rattle a shot against Kirkland's legs.

Then Fletcher's effort was cleared in the 39th minute after he had been set-up by Scholes.

Wigan, however, came close to opening the scoring in the 49th minute when Charles N'Zogbia won a free-kick off Patrice Evra early in the second half.

N'Zogbia dusted himself down and and picked out Paul Scharner in the area. He peeled away from his marker only to head narrowly wide of the post.

Antonio Valencia, such a cult figure during his time at Wigan, had to endure catcalls and jeers after going to ground in the 54th minute.

The Ecuador winger, however, was smiling two minutes later when he supplied the cross that led to the opening goal.

It came from Rooney - a fine header into the corner - and a landmark one as well. He savoured the moment and the goal was his reward for another typically hard shift.

That was the cue for United to turn the screw and Berbatov added a second two minutes later.

He started and finished the move cheekily chipping the ball over Kirkland before finding the net with his second touch after Scholes supplied the through ball.

United made it 3-0 in the 65th minute thanks to Rooney's second goal of the game. There was touch of luck about this effort as his shot took a slight deflection off Mario Melchiot to wrong-foot Kirkland after Berbatov had supplied the opening.

Rooney was given a rousing reception by the visiting fans when he was replaced by Michael Owen in the 72nd minute.

It was damage limitation now for Wigan, who had lost at home to Wolves in midweek.

However Owen made it 4-0 to United with his first goal for the club, a cool finish into the corner in the 85th minute after he had been set up by Nani.

Nani had the final word with a superb free-kick in stoppage time from 25 yards that sailed over a stranded Kirkland's head.

Rooney scored the only goal of the match as a struggling Manchester United side managed to grab a win in the o[ening match of the season.

Sir Alex Ferguson has promised Rooney a regular role through the middle this season as he looks to offset the loss of Cristiano Ronaldo's obvious goal threat.

And the England striker got off to the perfect start on Sunday, climbing highest to meet Nani's 34th-minute cross, then finishing off when his header bounced back off a post.

Newcastle have signed defender Danny Simpson on loan from Premier League champions Manchester United until January.

The 22-year-old defender has agreed a deal with the Championship club that will keep him at St James' Park until the new year.

Simpson has already enjoyed loan spells at Royal Antwerp, Sunderland, Ipswich and Blackburn since emerging through the youth ranks at Old Trafford in 2006.

The Magpies are bidding to return to the Premier League at the first time of asking having suffered relegation to England's second tier last season.
